escaflowne.jpgThis is the story of Hitomi Kanzaki's unexpected journey to the other-dimensional world of Gaea, a place where the Earth and the Moon hang in the sky. Unintentionally brought there by Van Fanel, the young king of a ravaged kingdom, Hitomi is thrown into the middle of Van's battle against a devastating enemy......an enemy that wants to save the people of Gaea from themselves, and will destroy anyone who gets in their way to do it. Hitomi and Van are accompanied by the handsome knight of the high skies, Allen Schezar, the beautiful and independent Princess Millerna Aston, and Van's devoted companion (and Hitomi's greatest irritant), the cat-girl Merle. During their journey, they meet many other fascinating people from whom they receive sometimes unexpected, assistance. Hitomi, Van and their comrades try to keep one step ahead of the treacherous Zaibach Empire and prevent them from gaining control of Escaflowne, the legendary defender of Van's people. Struggling through one battle after another, while at the same time, dealing with their own personal demons; they are forced to confront harsh truths about the people and ways of life they thought they could believe in, faced with the consequences of choices made in the past, and trying to cope with their own, sometimes confusing, emotions, they search for a way to defeat the Zaibach forces. None of them realizing, just how much impact those other, seemingly less important conflicts will have on the outcome of the war they are fighting!

Vision of Escaflowne is yet another great Japanese Animation series! The storyline and animation is very good! From the very beginning, Escaflowne achieves the feeling of escaping to fantastic world with large heaping spoonfuls of pure atmosphere. Nice touches such as Hitomi earnestly asking the viewer if she's still dreaming at the beginning of the first few episodes help intensify the other-worldliness of the adventure. Gaea is a gorgeous place, and Escaflowne is ready to give you a full visual and aural tour.

Here is a synopsis breakdown of Escaflowne by each volume.............
escaflowne-2.jpg Kanzaki Hitomi, the heroine of the Escaflowne saga, has one very special ability......the ability to see glimpses of the future. This, so-called the "vision" that she possessed, is what leads her into the alien planet called Gaea.

On a certain school day, the track team captain agrees to give Hitomi a kiss should she run 100 meters in 13 seconds. She, thus, starts running. As she approaches the finishing line, she sees the "vision" again, this time, a young man in battle with a dragon. The vision soon materializes and the dimensional gap, or a sort of a wormhole that supposedly connects two different dimensions through hyperspace, opens up for a brief period. This young man, called Van Fanel, slays the dragon, and whilst returning to his own world, takes Hitomi by accident. Hitomi finds herself in a totally different world, where earth and the moon appear together in the night sky. It is known later that Van Fanel was destined to be the king of Fanelia, but all of a sudden, the foreign force called the "Zaibach", attacks.

Gaea - A world where knights wage war within mechanized armor and dragons breathe fire through mysterious power gems. Van and Hitomi must undertake a perilous journey to discover the secrets of Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection.
Volume 1 - Hitomi Kanzaki is your typical high schoolgirl: she believes in tarot cards and dowsing, runs on the track team, and has a crush on an upperclassman. But a series of mysterious vision and a column of light thrusts Hitomi onto Gaea -- a world where knights wage war with mechanized armor and dragons breathe fire with power gems. Hitomi and a young swordsman named Van begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection. (Episodes 1-4)
Volume 2 - Led by the devilish Dilandau, the Dragon Slayers defeat young Van and his mechanical armor Escaflowne. In prison, Van confronts the Zaibach chief strategist and has a shocking revelation. Together with the dashing knight Allen and using her own divining abilities, can Hitomi rescue Van and escape to Asturia Kingdom? (Episodes 5-8)
Volume 3 - After a dramatic rescue from a death-defying plummet, Hitomi discovers the angel of her visions. The Dragon Slayers continue to pursue Van's Escaflowne, even as Allen intervenes in the fighting. Will the warning of the impending invasion arrive in time? (Episodes 9-11)
Volume 4 - A forbidden royal secret threatens to undermine the Freid Dukedom on the eve of a massive mechanized invasion. Hitomi and Van join the Freid royal entourage's retreat to a mountainous temple of warrior monks. Can Duke Freid make the final stand and stop Emperor Dornkirk from discovering the secrets of Atlantis? (Episodes 12-14)
escaflowne-3.jpg Volume 5 - As Van lies between the worlds of life and death, Hitomi glimpses a vision of ancient Atlantis and its destruction. The discovery of a dusty journal leads Hitomi and Van's party on the quest for the real Atlantis. However, can they fend off the two ruthless Zaibach leopard twins first? (Episodes 15-17)
Volume 6 - An experimental accident leads to an uneasy confrontation between the Zaibach emperor and Hitomi, Van, and Allen. Zaibach attempts to separate Hitomi from the Escaflowne and Van with a devious plan of manipulation. Meanwhile, will Asturia's royal wedding end in celebration or disaster when war intervenes? (Episodes 18-20)
Volume 7 - Tragedy leads a key Zaibach figure to turn against the empire, and Asturia tries to rally all of Gaea against Zaibach for the final battle. As Van struggles with feelings of betrayal by his brother, Zaibach's mechanized army launches a devastating pre-emptive strike on Asturia. (Episodes 21-23)
Volume 8 - The apocalyptic end to the Gaea War draws near as Asturia leads its allies against Zaibach. Emperor Dornkirk finally sees the fruits of his Machiavellian plans -- but first, Hitomi finds herself transported back to Earth. Will she decide to escape the war, or return to Van and join the final stand before all is destroyed? (Episodes 24-26)
